Kim Hart currently based in Italy. Her large and confrontational
portraits deal with the people in and around the city of Venice
where she lives and works. Approaching people in the streets she
photographs them, searching for those fleeting expressions which
betray the essence of their character, which once revealed, will
then be worked into a finished portrait.
The qualities she focuses on are common to everyone and resonate
within the individual viewer, making the finished portraits both
universal statements about the nature of humanity as well as about
individuality and identity. She is also careful not to reinforce
stereotypes, as the reading of the work would then go no further
than to fortify ones own preconceptions.
With a broad, swift and painterly mark, she
draws out the long history of literal and metaphoric marks and scars
manifest in a subjects face, and without sentimentality hopes to
introduce the viewer to a fundamental reality.
